What is IBT (Initial Basic Training)?
A motorcycle IBT (Initial Basic Training) in Ireland is
a mandatory, modular training course for learner riders, designed by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) to teach essential skills and improve safety, covering theory, off-road, and on-road riding, and is required before you can legally ride on public roads or get insurance/tax for a motorcycle. It's broken down into programs depending on the bike category, with instructors issuing a completion certificate after each module or the full course.

Motorcycle Categories:
A category motorcycle is at least 595 cc and it has an engine power of at least 50 kW.
A2 category motorcycle is at least 245 cc and it has an engine power of at least 20 kW, but not exceeding 35 kW.
A1 category motorcycle is at least 115 cc but not exceeding 125 cc and it has an engine power not exceeding 11kW.
Pre-Test and Bike Rental
We strongly recommend you do a pre-test before your RSA motorcycle test. One 'bad habit' can cause you to fail your test without been a bad rider. For bike rental we insist you do a pre-test. I've seen to many good riders fail because of simple mistakes. Pre-test and bike rental are available in Tallaght and Dun Laoghaire.
